Choosing the right hydraulic fitting not only just means choose thread size and pressure rating. The plating also influence the performance, lifespan and cost of fittings. White Zinc: White zin
c plating provides a basic barrier against corrosion of the underlying steel. However, this protection is relatively thin and primarily effective in mild, dry or indoor environments. When exposure to moisture, humidity, salt or chemicals will cause it to corrode much faster than nickel plating.
Nickel: Offers a far superior and dense barrier. Nickel plating is much more resistant to oxidation, rust, salt spray, moisture and a broad range of chemicals commonly used in industrial hydraulic applications. Nickel plating provides significantly longer-lasting protection, especially in harsh or outdoor conditions.
White Zinc: The zinc layer is relatively soft. During the handling, installation or even routine operation it's can be easily scratched, nicked or worn off. Once the plating is compromised, the underlying steel is exposed and vulnerable to corrosion.
Nickel: Nickel plating is harder and more durable. It offers excellent resistance to scratches, abrasion and surface wear. This hardness also makes nickel-plated fittings much more resistant to galling, a common issue with softer or similar metals.
White Zinc: Has a dull, matte, white or gray appearance, sometimes with a slight yellow or green from the chromate. It's functional but not particularly decorative.
Nickel: Provides a bright, smooth and attractive silvery-white finish. It's often chosen where beauty and performance matters.
White Zinc: The layer can break down at sustained temperatures above approximately 150°F (65°C), diminishing its corrosion resistance. It also has poor resistance to acids, strong alkalis and harsh chemicals.
Nickel: Maintains its protective properties better at elevated temperatures. It also offers better resistance to a wider range of chemicals, oils and hydraulic fluids compared to zinc plating.
White Zinc: Is the most cost-effective corrosion protection plating for steel hydraulic fittings. This lower cost is its primary advantage.
Nickel: Nickel is a costlier material and its electroplating involves a more complex and expensive plating process. This results in a higher price point for nickel-plated fittings.
