Product Features

Valve Design & Operation

The Industrial Ball Valve features a full-port design that minimizes pressure drop across the valve, ensuring efficient fluid flow with minimal energy loss. It utilizes a chrome-plated brass or stainless steel ball with a precision-machined bore that aligns with the valve ports in the open position, providing unobstructed flow. The valve operates with a quarter-turn (90°) handle rotation from fully open to fully closed, allowing for quick and precise flow control. A positive stop mechanism ensures accurate positioning in both open and closed positions, preventing over-rotation that could damage internal components. The valve stem is designed with a blow-out proof construction for enhanced safety in high-pressure applications.

Pressure Rating & Performance

Engineered for medium to high-pressure hydraulic systems, the Industrial Ball Valve is rated for a maximum operating pressure of 6,000 PSI (414 bar) for standard sizes up to 2", with larger sizes rated up to 3,000 PSI (207 bar). It maintains reliable performance across a temperature range of -20°C to 180°C (-4°F to 356°F) depending on seal material selection. The valve's design allows for bidirectional flow control, with equal performance in either flow direction. It features a bubble-tight shutoff capability, ensuring zero leakage in the closed position even under maximum pressure conditions, which is critical for system isolation and safety.

Material & Construction

The Industrial Ball Valve is available in several material configurations to suit different application requirements: cast carbon steel for general industrial applications, 316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance in harsh environments, and brass for lower pressure applications and corrosive fluid service. The valve seats and seals are constructed from PTFE (Teflon®) for standard applications, providing excellent chemical resistance and low friction operation. Optional Viton® seals are available for high-temperature applications, while polyethylene seats are offered for food-grade applications requiring FDA compliance. All wetted surfaces are carefully selected to ensure compatibility with common hydraulic fluids.

Applications

Industrial Hydraulic Power Units

In factory and industrial settings, the Industrial Ball Valve is widely used in hydraulic power units to control flow to various system components. It provides reliable isolation of pumps, accumulators, and pressure relief valves, allowing for safe maintenance and system shutdown. The valve's quick actuation makes it ideal for emergency shutdown systems, where rapid isolation of hydraulic components is essential to prevent equipment damage or personal injury.

Mobile Hydraulic Systems

The Industrial Ball Valve finds extensive application in mobile hydraulic equipment, including construction machinery, agricultural vehicles, and utility trucks. It is commonly used to control flow to auxiliary hydraulic circuits, implement attachments, and hydraulic motors, providing operators with precise control over equipment functions. The valve's robust construction withstands the vibration, temperature variations, and mechanical stress associated with mobile applications, ensuring reliable performance in demanding field conditions.

Process Industry Hydraulics

In process industries such as chemical manufacturing, pulp and paper, and metal processing, the Industrial Ball Valve provides critical flow control in hydraulic systems powering process equipment. It is used to control hydraulic power to mixers, presses, and material handling systems, where precise flow regulation and reliable shutoff are essential for maintaining process efficiency and product quality. The stainless steel version is particularly valuable in corrosive environments or applications requiring frequent washdowns.

FAQ

What distinguishes a hydraulic ball valve from other valve types?

Hydraulic ball valves offer several advantages over other valve types in hydraulic systems: their quarter-turn operation allows for faster actuation compared to gate or globe valves; the full-port design minimizes pressure drop, reducing energy loss; and they provide bubble-tight shutoff even after extended periods of inactivity. Ball valves also offer better resistance to vibration-induced leakage than many other valve types and can handle higher pressure drops across the valve without damage. These characteristics make ball valves particularly well-suited for hydraulic systems where quick response, reliable shutoff, and minimal pressure loss are important.

How does the Industrial Ball Valve handle hydraulic fluid contamination?

The Industrial Ball Valve is designed to tolerate moderate levels of hydraulic fluid contamination common in industrial systems. The chrome-plated ball and hardened seats provide resistance to scoring from particulate contamination, while the valve's design allows for flushing of contaminants when cycling between open and closed positions. For systems with severe contamination issues, we recommend specifying the scraper option, which incorporates a wiper mechanism that cleans the ball surface during operation, preventing debris from becoming trapped between the ball and seat. Regular fluid analysis and filtration are still recommended to maintain optimal valve performance and longevity.

What maintenance procedures are recommended for the Industrial Ball Valve?

Regular maintenance helps ensure long-term performance of the Industrial Ball Valve. We recommend periodic operation of the valve (at least monthly) to prevent seizing, particularly in systems that remain in one position for extended periods. The valve stem should be lubricated annually with a food-grade silicone grease compatible with the valve seals. Visual inspections for leakage, corrosion, or damage should be performed during system maintenance. If leakage occurs around the stem, the packing nut can be gently tightened (1/8 turn maximum) to restore the seal. For valves in critical applications, we recommend complete inspection and seal replacement every 2-3 years depending on operating conditions.

Can the Industrial Ball Valve be used for throttling applications?

While primarily designed for on/off service, the Industrial Ball Valve can be used for limited throttling applications at flows up to 30% of full capacity. For continuous throttling service, we recommend consulting our technical team to ensure proper sizing and selection. Throttling at higher flow rates can cause excessive velocity across the partially open ball, leading to noise, vibration, and premature wear of the valve seats. When throttling is required, we recommend using the valve in the 30-70% open range to minimize these effects and extend valve life.
